A new year and it's been lovely here on the coast. We went for a walk along the beach in the sunshine and the haze. There were lots of people out walking their dogs and enjoying having somewhere to walk. It's quite cold though - it was good to get back to scrambled egg and smoked salmon on toast! The sun is setting now behind a bank of blue clouds that have sat in front of Arran all day, and the sky is milky pink and orange. Feeling very wintery.

We watched Joanna Lumley's journey to see the Northern Lights last night - we may not have a telly but there's always i-player! The scenery was fantastic. As you'd expect, she was a fabulously enthusiastic presenter, carrying with her a childhood copy of Ponny the Penguin and a sketchpad for pastel drawings of blood-red fishing huts with pale blue window frames. Ok, so this little penguin saw the Aurora Australis not the Northern Lights, but out in Malaysia the young Joanna Lumley didn't realise that. We took the same train from Trondheim to Bodo back in 2003 when we travelled through Norway by train. It made me want to go back to Norway. Maybe that's a resolution for 2009.
