It’s so long since I’ve written on here, and so much has happened since the summer, although, until recently, not much writing of poems. I lost my nerve for a while and it’s taken time and space to put the rejection slips to one side and enjoy looking at an open sheet of paper again. So, this entry could be a splurge about the risks of rejection, and the power of poetry magazines. But let’s not! Instead, let this be a big smile about connection through poems. This has happened to me in two simple and solid ways in the last few months. The first was a poem on a poster on Glasgow’s SPT subway in a project run with the Scottish Poetry Library. I stood reading Rosemary Dobson’s poem Folding the Sheets and missed a train but remembered why I love poems so much. Then I watched two elderly ladies stand there in their macs and clear plastic hair protectors talking through the poem. They were canny enough to catch their train though. Maybe there’s something about plastic hoods. I might get hold of some for when I’m in Glasgow in May!

The second point of connection has been through a couple of poetry mailing lists and of course the wonderful Guardian online Poetry Workshop. Whenever I can’t write I look through the workshops. They’re a fantastic resource. It’s also a great way of accessing feedback from a varied group of poets. For a more light hearted online poetry challenge, with feedback from other posters, I enjoy Helena Nelson’s Worddoctors site. Follow the Bulletin Board link at the foot of the page and look for the weekly Polympic challenge.
