So why is it that when you're unwell you end up reading all those books from when you were a kid or a teenager that you've carried around with you ever since? Carried around literally in boxes from college room to rented room to first house, and metaphorically too. These books just sit there on the shelf and at the back of your mind kind of waiting for you to get that high temperature and aspirin induced haze that lets you give yourself permission to sit around in bed and read. For me it's like entering spaces and landscapes I'd half forgotten but which are important to me. It is somehow like getting to know yourself again. Now there's the web it's also possible to find interviews like this wonderful one with Alison Bechdel for the Rutgers Reading Series. Her reaction to the last question is magical.
